Jazz pianist Dave Brubeck and his trio finish up a 2-day recording
session for a Disney themed record album to be called Dave Digs
Disney. (Additonal tracks will be cut August 3.) For many years the quartet had played various
Disney tunes at live performances, but it wasn't until a Brubeck family trip to Disneyland that Dave
realized he should gather them together for an album! (Dave Digs Disney will be first released on
2005:
The United States Postal Service releases the second set of The Art of Disney stamps entitled "Celebration." They feature Mickey & Pluto, Alice & The Mad Hatter, Ariel & Flounder and Snow White & Dopey.
1939:
Disney's Donald Duck short Sea Scouts, directed by Dick Lundy and
written by Carl Barks, is released. In this short, Donald fancies himself as an old-fashioned Navy Captain ... although he knows nothing about sailing!
1950:
The Goofy short Motor Mania (the very first of Goofy's car safety cartoons)
is released. Goofy plays Mr. Walker a kind hearted soul who changes into nasty Mr. Wheeler
when he gets behind the wheel of his car (like Dr. Jekyll turning into Mr. Hyde)! Directed by Jack
Kinney, it features the voices of Pinto Colvig (as Goofy) and John McLeish (as the narrator).
1966:
Cartoonist Carl Barks voluntarily retires after 3 decades of
drawing Donald Duck comic books for Disney. First hired in 1936, Barks started out as an apprentice animator on the storyboards of several Donald Duck shorts.
From 1943 to 1966 he wrote and drew hundreds of Donald Duck stories and created
Duckburg and several new characters for the comics, such as Uncle Scrooge McDuck,
Gyro Gearloose, Gladstone Gander and the Beagle Boys.
1993:
Disney acquires the independent film production house Miramax Films for $60 million. From the deal, Disney will gain the rights to Miramax's library of more than 200 films and agree to finance all future Miramax productions. (After 17 years, Disney will sell Miramax to Filmyard Holdings on December 3, 2010 for $663 million.)
2003:
Singer Toni Braxton makes her debut appearance in the title role of
Disney's Broadway show Aida. This is her second starring role on Broadway, as five
years ago she starred as Belle in Beauty and the Beast.
Buddy Hackett, famed comedian, actor and 2003 Disney Legend honoree passes away at age 78 in Malibu, California. He portrayed Tennessee Steinmetz in the 1969 live-action feature The Love Bug and supplied the voice for Scuttle the seagull in both the 1989 The Little Mermaid and the 2000 direct-to-video sequel The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea.

Disney's live-action comedy The Million Dollar Duck, starring Dean Jones, Sandy Duncan, and Joe Flynn is released. The film centers on a scientist named Professor Albert Dooley (Dean Jones) and his family who posses a duck that lays golden eggs!
1999:
Disney's Young Musicians Symphony Orchestra performs at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City. An annual event since 1991, this is the orchestra's final year.
1974:
A special Summer Press Party is held for Disneyland's newest
attraction America Sings (which had opened the day before).
Actor Fred Shields, best known for voicing the Great Prince of the Forest in Disney's
Bambi, passes away in Los Angeles, California. He also narrated the 1943 Saludos Amigos.

Disney's Silly Symphony cartoon Busy Beavers, directed by Wilfred Jackson,
is released. A group of cheerful beavers come up with inventive ways to build a dam. But when a
storm causes a flood and debris destroys their dam, a clever little beaver saves the day when he
topples a large tree, forming a new dam to block the flood!
2008:
The Innoventions Dream Home opens to the public at Disneyland. First revealed last June 17 for a limited time, the Tomorrowland attraction is a peek into the future of a state-of-the-art technological home.
2010:
Captain EO returns to Tokyo Disneyland. The 3D science fiction film starring Michael Jackson and
directed by Francis Ford Coppola, had originally run at Tokyo Disneyland from March 1987 to September 1996.
2009:
"Director Francesca Zambello, our creators, designers and cast conjured a world unlike any Broadway has seen before, and audiences have been captivated by it at every explosive performance. We are tremendously proud of the show and are confident we'll have an excellent summer but it would be fiscally irresponsible to our shareholders to risk operating losses with such a big show in the historically challenging fall months. We are closing the Broadway production to concentrate on the long future life of this title — beginning with next year's national tour and upcoming international productions."
1962:
Meet Me at Disneyland (a limited TV series broadcast live on KTTV directly from the
Anaheim park) airs episode 4 "Swingin’ Through Space." Tomorrowland is the setting for this
episode, which begins as host Johnny Jacobs greets the night’s guests, who arrive in the miniature cars from the
Autopia. One of the guests is Annette Funicello, who helps host the evening’s festivities. Music from The Space
Men provides a backdrop to scenes of dancers and the crowds throughout Tomorrowland. Special guests include
the Four Freshmen, Richard "Dick St. John" Gasling, astronaut John Glenn, Jimmy Dodd, and Cubby O’Brien.
Meet Me at Disneyland is designed to boost park attendance during the summer weeknights.
2011:
It is reported that Disney is developing another film based on one of its theme park rides. Walt Disney Pictures has hired Jason Dean Hall to write the script based on "The Matterhorn," a popular amusement bob sled ride at Disneyland. The storyline will be about five young mountain climbers scaling The Matterhorn who have an unfortunate encounter with a Yeti.

2018:
Toy Story Land opens at Disney's Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World.
A themed land based on the Disney·Pixar film series Toy Story, the 11-acre addition features such attractions as Slinky Dog Dash (a family-friendly roller coaster) and Alien Swirling Saucers (a flat ride themed around Buzz Lightyear where riders are whipped around a toy playset of outer space). Also featured is a new entrance for the expanded Toy Story Mania! (first opening in 2008). Guests can eat at Woody's Lunch Box – a counter-service restaurant resembling an old-fashioned lunch box.
2017:
Ghost of the Mountains, a nature documentary about snow leopards in China, is
released by Disneynature. The eleventh nature documentary released under that label, it is directed
by Ben Wallis and narrated by Antoine Fuqua.
Disney's Hollywood Records releases The Storm, the second studio album from American singer-songwriter ZZ Ward.
1995:
Judge Dredd, a science fiction action film, based on the comic book
character of the same name, is released by Disney's Hollywood Pictures. Sylvester Stallone plays Joseph Dredd, the most famous Judge (a police officer with instant field judiciary powers), who is convicted for a crime he did not commit and now must face his murderous counterpart. Distributed by Disney's Buena Vista Pictures, Judge Dredd also features Diane Lane, Rob Schneider, Armand Assante, and Max von Sydow.
1978:
Disney's live-action comedy The Cat from Outer Space, starring Ronnie Schell (as army
Sergeant Duffy & the voice of Jake the cat) is released. An unidentified flying object makes an emergency landing on Earth and is taken into custody by the United States government. The occupant of the "flying
saucer" turns out to be a cat-like alien who can communicate with humans! Directed by Norman Tokar, the film's large cast includes Ken Berry, Sandy Duncan, Harry Morgan, McLean Stevenson (making his film debut), Alan Young, Roddy McDowell, Hans Conried, James Hampton, and Dallas McKennon.
2019:
Disneyland Paris raises its live entertainment credentials ever higher with the premiere of The Lion King: Rhythms of the Pride Lands, a stunning take on Disney’s greatest modern story. Inside the reborn Frontierland Theater (a rebuilt, darkened and modern stage venue created from the bones of The Chaparral Theater), guests are wowed from song to song through the musical hits of Disney’s The Lion King. The 30-minute show will run through September 2019.
2014:
Captain EO closes at Tokyo Disneyland to make way for Stitch Encounter in spring 2015. Originally running from 1986-1996, the Michael Jackson film had reopened in July 2010.

Composer, conductor, and arranger Will Schaefer passes away at age 78 in California.
He orchestrated approximately thirty episodes of The Magical World of Disney (also known as The Wonderful World of Disney) and portions of many Disney films such as Old Yeller and Toby Tyler or Ten Weeks with a Circus. He received an Emmy nomination (Best Musical Score) for The Magical World of Disney 1979 episode "The Sky Trap." His theme park attractions include Pirates of the Caribbean, America the Beautiful, Bear Country, It's a Small World, and Innoventions.
2021:
Disney+ Hotstar is launched in Thailand. This makes Thailand the fourth country in Southeast Asia
to have access to the streaming service, following Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia.
