Disney World's Coronado Springs Resort hosts a 4-day Native
American Business Conference and Trade Show. The event, organized by
the United Indian Development Association, allows American Indians as well as other small-business people
to network with representatives of large companies.
Starting on this day, a new program allows Disney World
guests to have lunch or dinner with a Walt Disney Imagineer at the
Hollywood Brown Derby (located in Disney-MGM Studios).
2005:
The 2006 Walt Disney Studios Showcase takes place at the Kodak Theatre in
Hollywood, California. The invitation only, all-day event is to show studio partners (such as theater
owners and movie distributors) what Disney is planning for the new year. Hosted by Dick Cook (chairman of
The Walt Disney Studios), special guests performing include Elton John, and in attendance is Roy Disney.
1950:
Disney's Pluto cartoon Camp Dog, directed by Charles Nichols, is released.
Two mangy coyotes attempt to raid the cache of food supplies left by fishermen - not realizing that
"Camp Dog" Pluto (voiced by Pinto Colvig) is on guard!
1961:
Nurse-turned-actress, comedienne, writer, director, television producer
and daytime television host Bonnie Hunt is born in Chicago, Illinois. Her
Disney voice credits include Bonnie Hopps in Zootopia, Dolly in Toy Story 3, Sally in Cars, Flint in Monsters Inc., and Rosie in A Bug's Life. (Movie fans may recognize Hunt from such
features as Rain Man, Beethoven, and Cheaper by the Dozen.)
1963:
"Davy Crockett at the Alamo" airs on the NBC-TV series
Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color.
1984:
Michael Eisner is elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Walt Disney
Productions (replacing Ray Watson) and Frank Wells is elected President and Chief
Operations. At this time, Walt Disney Productions is approximately $900 million in debt. (By 1987, Walt Disney
Productions will be worth $340 million!)
1991:
Disney World's 20th Anniversary Surprise Celebration Parade kicks
off down Main Street USA. WDW's 20th Anniversary will officially start October 1.
1999:
IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of Earth begins thrilling Epcot guests with a soft
opening. Officially debuting October 1, the nightly show utilizes fireworks, pyrotechnics, laser lights, and
fountains to create a visual production on the park's World Showcase Lagoon. IllumiNations 2000: Reflections of
Earth is part of the Walt Disney World Millennium Celebration, but will be so successful that after the celebration
ends - the 2000 will be dropped from the name and the show will continue as IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth.
The thirty-eighth episode of Disney's Recess, "Recess is Cancelled/Tattletale
Heart" premieres on UPN and in syndication. Veteran actor John Forsythe supplies the voice of
the president in "Recess is Cancelled."
2000:
Larry King Live with guest Dick Van Dyke airs on CNN. When asked if "Mary Poppins" was his
first big movie, Van Dyke says: "Yes, absolutely. And Walt Disney, for some strange reason, thought of me. God
bless him. Everybody else in the show was British. And I don't know why..."
2001:
The Themed Entertainment Association (or TEA) hold their Thea Awards Ceremony
at the Alex Theater in Glendale, California. Among the Disney winners are:
Imagineer Tony Baxter (Lifetime Achievement), Epcot's Millenium Village (Award for Outstanding Achievement -
Attraction), DisneyQuest's Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for Buccaneer Gold (Award for Outstanding
Achievement - Attraction), and Disney's Fastpass (Award for Outstanding Achievement - Breakthrough
Innovation). (TEA is an international alliance of the world's most talented and experienced professionals in the
location-based entertainment industry.)
Disney's House of Mouse debuts season 2 with the episode "Daisy's Debut."

Goofy's Freeway Trouble, directed by Les Clark, is released. A sequel to Freewayphobia, this
short shows how proper automotive maintainence and driver alertness is essential to freeway safety.

It is announced that Camp Rock drew in 2.4 million viewers on Disney Channel in the
U.K. in its premiere weekend, making it the most successful non-sequel ever on
the channel (even surpassing High School Musical).

Disney's Minnie Mouse short First Aiders is released.
Directed by Charles Nichols, Minnie practices first-aid on Pluto to Figaro's
delight and amusement. (It is the first cartoon short in which Minnie appears without Mickey.)

Disney’s Animal Kingdom celebrates Elephant Appreciation Day with a host of
activities for children and families at Rafiki’s Planet Watch.
The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes debuts on Disney XD with the episode
"Iron Man is Born!" (The cartoon series by Marvel Animation is based on the Marvel Comics superhero
team the Avengers.)
Season 2 of the ABC-TV sitcom Modern Family kicks off with the episode "The Old Wagon."
1995:
Hollywood Pictures releases the live-action feature film Unstrung Heroes to
U.S. theaters. A comedy-drama directed by Diane Keaton, the film stars Andie MacDowell, John
Turturro and Michael Richards. A 12-year-old (Nathan Watt) striving to cope with the impending death of his mother
(MacDowell) must leave her and his genius father (Turturro) and live with his crazy uncles (Richards & Maury
Chaykin) in 1960s Los Angeles.
1981:
Wars, is born in Louisville, Kentucky. Raised in Orlando, Florida (she was a WDW Cast Member in
her younger days) her 2005 wedding reception was held at Walt Disney World. In 2011 Eckestein helped
promote the revamped Star Tours attraction and took part in one of the Star Wars Weekends. Her Disney
Channel credits include a minor character named Muffy on That's So Raven and a guest appearance on a 2006
episode of Phil of the Future.
1973:
The Lawrence Welk Show airs the episode "Tribute to Walt Disney." A musical variety
show hosted by Welk (a big band leader), it first debuted back in 1951 as a local program on KTLA-TV in Los
Angeles, California. Going national in 1955, The Lawrence Welk Show will run for an amazing 27 years.
2004:
The Touchstone Television show Lost premieres on ABC. A drama series that follows the
survivors of the crash of a commercial passenger jet flying between Sydney and Los Angeles, on a mysterious
tropical island somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean, Lost will run for 6 seasons.
2011:
Although the Hawaiian resort officially opened for business on August 29, the grand opening event takes place at
sunset on this day along with Mickey & Minnie Mouse, Bob Iger (president and chief executive officer of The Walt
Disney Company) and Tom Staggs (chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts).
The Revenge of the Headless Horseman, an exclusive walk-through attraction at
Hong Kong Disneyland for the Disney's Haunted Halloween Event, opens in Adventureland. A haunted circus featuring living haunts and specters, it replaces Demon Jungle
during the Halloween season.
Season 8 of ABC's medical drama Grey's Anatomy debuts with the episode "Free Falling."
2012:
The Disney Magic cruise ship makes her maiden call at the Port of Galveston, Texas.
To celebrate its Disney Cruise Line's arrival in Texas, the funnel of the Disney Magic dons a cowboy hat.

2015:
The Indiana Jones themed Jock Lindsey's Hangar Bar opens at Downtown
Disney at 11:30 a.m. Featuring an expansive bar with aviation decor and seating for 150 guests, the
new lounge is tucked in between Paradiso 37 and the recently opened BOATHOUSE restaurant. Jock Lindsey’s
Hangar Bar is part of the largest expansion in Downtown Disney history, which will transform the area into Disney Springs. (Jock Lindsey, a character from the Indian Jones' films, was Indy’s pilot and sidekick.)
2013:
The 65th Primetime Emmy Awards are handed out at the Nokia Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles, California. Televised by CBS, it is hosted by Neil Patrick Harris.

season for Home Improvement.
2019:
The Lion King: Rhythms of the Pride Lands, a musical stage show running since June at Disneyland Paris, closes.
2016:
The 3rd season of ABC-TV's legal drama series How to Get Away with Murder debuts with the episode "We're Good People Now."
ABC premieres season 13 of the medical drama Grey's Anatomy with the episode "Undo."
1959:
Voice actor Dave Boat is born in Santa Clara County, California. Known as the voice of Bubbha in The Good Dinosaur, his Disney credits include such films as Frozen and Wreck-it Ralph. He can also be heard in episodes of Avengers Assemble, Doc McStuffins, and Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.
1918:
Animator, cartoonist and animation instructor Ken Southworth is born in Farnworth, Lancashire, England. Working for a number of major animation studios throughout his nearly 60-year career, including Walt Disney Studios starting in 1944, his credits include such features as Alice in Wonderland,
Cinderella, The Adventures of Ichabod and Mister Toad, The Three Caballeros, and Song of the South.
(Southwork later worked for animation powerhouse Hanna-Barbera for twenty one years.)
1927:
Professional baseball pitcher, coach, and manager Tommy Lasorda is born in Norristown, Pennsylvania. Best known for managing the Los Angeles Dodgers of Major League Baseball from 1976 through 1996, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame as a manager in 1997. Disney's Vero Beach Resort honored Lasorda by officially naming the resort's popular recreation lawn "Lasorda Field" during a special ceremony on February 18, 2008. During the more than six decades in which the Dodgers called Vero Beach, Florida, their spring home, Lasorda had become one of the most recognized figures in baseball. Making cameos on TV and film, Lasorda voiced Lucky, a Rough Collie, in Disney's 1996 "Homeward Bound II: Lost in San Francisco." Thomas Charles Lasorda passed at age 93 in January 2021.
