Disney's 39th Silly Symphony cartoon The Pied Piper is released. Directed by Wilfred

Disneyland's Canal Boats of the World attraction closes after 2 months of operation. It will be revamped and renamed Storyland Canal Boats.

Actress Jennifer Tilly, the voice of Celia Mae in Disney/Pixar's 2001 Monsters, Inc., is

Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter Richard Marx is born in Winnetka, Illinois. His song "Remember When" (performed by LeAnn Rimes) was composed to celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Disneyland. Disney's 2006 Bambi II features his song "Through Your Eyes." In 2009 Marx and his band
performed at Epcot as part of the Eat to the Beat Concert Series during the International Food & Wine Festival.
(Marx had a string of hit singles in the late 1980s and 1990s, including "Endless Summer Nights", "Right Here
Waiting", "Now and Forever", and "Hazard".)

"Walt: The Man Behind the Myth," a TV special about Walt Disney, airs as part of The Wonderful World of Disney on ABC. Narrated by Dick Van Dyke, the 2-hour show features interviews with some of the people who knew Walt best.
Sabrina Bryan, a member of Disney's girl group The Cheetah Girls, is born Reba Sabrina Hinojos in Yorba Linda, California. A dancer, choreographer, actress and singer, she co-starred in the Disney Channel Original Movie "The Cheetah Girls" and its sequels, "The Cheetah Girls 2" and "The Cheetah Girls: One World." (In early 2009, The Cheetah Girls officially announced that they had disbanded.) She was also the voice of Pamela Hamster in the animated Disney channel series "Fish Hooks," and had a small role in the 2001 Disney Channel film "The Jersey," Bryan has acted in several TV shows, with notable guest appearances in several episodes of the soap opera "The Bold and the Beautiful." She also competed in the 5th season of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars."

"Handy Manny," a new animated series for preschoolers, debuts on Disney Channel's Playhouse Disney. Actor Wilmer Valderrama (best known from the hit series That 70's Show) stars in the title role of Manny Garcia, a cheerful handyman.

The Restaurant el Marrakesh opens in the Morocco Pavilion at EPCOT.
1997:
Walt Disney Records reissues the soundtrack to the
animated feature The Jungle Book. The compact disc includes
a recorded interview with the Sherman Brothers, demo material,
and two rare songs from the original 1969 record album.
A young Walt Disney

from 1906-1911.
Also reissued on this day is the soundtrack to the animated feature Dumbo. This disc features an instrumental version of "Spread Your Wings" performed by composer Oliver Wallace (who wrote a majority of the film's music).

Singer, songwriter & actor Nicholas Jerry "Nick" Jonas, the youngest member of the Jonas Brothers trio, is born in Dallas, Texas. At the age of 6 he was discovered while singing at a barber shop and referred to a professional show business manager. The following year, Nick began performing on Broadway - which in 2002 included a stint as Chip in Disney's Beauty and the Beast. Along with his brothers Joe and Kevin, the Jonas Brothers released their debut studio album It's About Time through the Columbia label in 2006. After leaving Columbia Records and signing with Disney's Hollywood Records, the group released their self-titled second studio album in 2007, which became their breakthrough record. The band soon became prominent figures on the Disney Channel appearing in the widely successful musical television film Camp Rock (2008) and its sequel Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010) as well as two of their own series, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream (2008–2010) and Jonas (2009–2010). (Nick has gone on to have a solo music career and act in such feature films as Midway and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle.)
Season 2 of the ABC-TV sitcom Home Improvement kicks off with the episode "Read My Hips." Based on the stand-up comedy of Tim Allen, Home Improvement centers on Tim "The Toolman" Taylor (host of the home-improvement show "Tool Time"') and his wife Jill and their 3 sons.

Disney World formally reveals plans for its Bay Lake Tower at Disney World's
Contemporary Resort - confirming earlier reports that the 15-story tower rising just
beyond the Magic Kingdom will be used for time shares. Disney also unveils plans to sell time
shares at the Treehouse Villas at Disney's Saratoga Springs Resort & Spa.
Over at Disneyland, the second new Mark VII, Blue, monorail goes into service.
Disney's 2000 live-action feature film 102 Dalmatians is re-released on DVD.

Television director, actor and television screenwriter Lawrence Dobkin is born in Los
Angeles, California. He was the original narrator of WDW's The Hall of Presidents between 1971-1973 and
again later between 2001-2008. (Beginning in 1958 he announced the landmark television series Naked City,
closing each episode with the famous statement, "There are eight million stories in the naked city, and this has
been one of them.")

Marceline, a film by Andy Neitzert, screens at the Uptown Theater in Marceline, Missouri, as part of the town's Walt Disney's Hometown Toonfest weekend. The documentary explores the ways in which the north-central Missouri town’s narrative and the story of Walt
Disney himself converge. Marceline will play again on Sunday the 18th.
Halloween Time at Disneyland Resort begins. The spirit of Halloween Time
invades Disneyland Resort with Disney villains, Mickey Mouse and his friends in Halloween
costumes, along with the seasonal transformations of Haunted Mansion into Haunted Mansion
Holiday and Space Mountain into Space Mountain Ghost Galaxy.
Disney’s Newsies, the Musical premieres at Paper Mill Playhouse in Millburn, New York. Jeremy Jordan (who recently made his Broadway debut in Rock of Ages) stars in this stage version of the 1992 Disney film about the notable newsboys strike of 1899 in New York City. Eight-time Academy Award-winning composer Alan Menken, who wrote the songs for the original movie, was brought back to pen additional songs for the score.

Three weeks after "Here Come the Muppets" closes, another stage show called
"Muppets on Location" opens on a stage near the "Muppet*Vision 3-D Theater"
at Disney-MGM Studios. The show features human-sized walkaround versions of the characters.
The second season of the NBC sitcom Blossom airs with the episode "Second Base." Produced by Reo's Impact Zone Productions and Witt/Thomas Productions in association with Touchstone Television, Blossum is distributed by Buena Vista Television.

ABC-TV airs the fifty-ninth episode of DIsney's Recess, "Beyond a Reasonable
Scout/The C Note." Guest stars include Richard Karn as Edmund P. Edmunton in "Beyond a
Reasonable Scout" and Edward Asner as Thaddeus T. Third V in "The C Note."

Disney Theatrical Productions announces a cast of 34 actors for its next Broadway
musical, Aladdin. Based on the 1992 animated musical film, the stage version will star Adam Jacobs in the
title role, James Monroe Iglehart as the Genie, Courtney Reed as Jasmine, and Tony Award nominee Jonathan
Freeman as the villainous Jafar. Freeman (who has appeared in other Disney Broadway shows) was the
voice of Jafar in the original Disney movie. The stage adaptation will include several songs from the
movie (including the Academy Award-winning “Whole New World")
as well as several new numbers co-written by Alan Menken.

Actress Amy Poehler is born in Newton, Massachusetts.
She is the voice of Joy in Pixar's 2015 release Inside Out.
2018:
Hong Kong Disneyland closes early on this Sunday as Typhoon Mangkhut strikes
with winds of 107 miles per hour. The park will remain closed until September 18.
1925:
Actor Morgan Woodward is born Thomas Morgan Woodward in Fort Worth, Texas.
Best known for his recurring role on the television soap opera Dallas and his appearance in the 1967 film Cool Hand Luke, his Disney credits include The Great Locomotive Chase (1956) as Alex, The Wild Country (1970) as Ab Cross, and One Little Indian (1973) as Sgt. Raines.

Drummer Patrick Edward Doyle is born in Parkersburg, West Virginia. Starting his professional career in the Sons of Liberty Fife & Drum Corps at Walt Disney World in 1972, he went on to lead the Grand Floridian Society Orchestra for 30 years.
